3 Types Of Flight Simulators Effective For Pilots

Being in the air navigation is not an easy profession, especially if you’re the pilot. One mistake will not only endanger your life, but you’ll also be responsible for the other lives aboard the plane and in the ground. That’s why being a pilot is a profession that requires a lot of experience, skills, and knowledge in the field.

A pilot should also be able to make a fast and sound solution even under pressure because his or her action is the one that will determine the outcome of any situation. Anything can happen in the air, and before you can become a full-time pilot, you must know how to react to every situation possible. It can be from bird strikes, bad weather, or engine failure. The passengers gave their trust to the pilot because they know that these professionals have been in training for years.

Unlike in other professions, you cannot just give any air vehicles a “test drive” as it will also include risk of a crash. To help future pilots, instead of handling a real air vehicle, they must first train in training devices. In addition, aspiring pilots must past the test which will be given during the training in order to go to a new level. Here are the three simulators that they use in aviation.

Aviation Training Device or ATD

The Aviation Training Device or ATD is a kind of flight simulator that teaches the basics of aviation. Private Pilot Certificate is given to those who manage to pass this test. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) defines ATD as a replica of aircraft instruments, panels, equipment, an controls in an enclosed aircraft cockpit or in an open flight deck area. ATD has two categories: the Basic Aviation Training Device or BATD and Advanced Training Device or AATD.

Flight Training Device or FTD

A Flight Training Device or FTD is an even more advanced flight simulator that is used to train aspiring pilots. One of the biggest difference between FTD and ATD is that FTD has a life-size replica of the equipment, instruments, panels, and the controls of the simulator. FTD has four levels of difficulty, and each level must be passed before the student can go to the next training stage. FTD trains the pilot’s knowledge about aerodynamic programming, system modeling, and others.

Full Fight Simulator or FFS

Last but not least is the Full Flight Simulator or FFS. FFS is the most advanced flight simulator and is one of the hardest one to pass, as it requires both technical knowledge and creativity. Just like in FTD, FFS has four levels of simulation, with levels ranging from A-D and has some type of motion system. Level C and D, the two highest levels, must have an outside-world field of view. Level C requires a motion platform with all six degrees of freedom while Level D requires all requirement from Level C, with the addition of at least 150 degrees outside-worldview. FFS captures the closest experience in a real thing, as there are cockpit sounds, visual, and even motions effects.
